The Book Corner: Happy Gift-Giving

It's that time of year, when we're all trying to think of the perfect gift for the kids on our list.

For many of us, books are a great solution.  A wonderful, recently published book, (March 2024) that fills the bill for the 4-8 set is, “Discovering Plants and Flowers: What Will You Find?” It is written by the editors ofStorey Publishing and is part of the Backpack Explorer Series.

Like others in the series, “Discovering Plants and Flowers” is very interactive.  In this book, kids can search for wildflowers, ferns, grasses, seeds and more.  The appealing part to any adult gifting the book is that readers learn basic plant science through activities that include scavenger hunts, a plant log, a real magnifying glass—and the big winner—stickers!

The book encourages kids to get outdoors and learn about the fascinating plants and flowers right in their own backyard, local park or field.  This is the seventh book in the Backpack Explorer series.  This one inspires the reader to become a junior naturalist in search of plant life that they might otherwise not even notice.  It's designed as a take-along nature book and is loaded with activities, prompts and ideas.  One can envision a group of kids working together to solve the mysteries of nature.

The book, which is really a kit, has 12 interactive field guides, sensory scavenger hunts, activities including: “Paint with Dandelions”, “Watch a Flower Grow”. One unique addition are the discovery zone pages with tips for identifying plants and flowers, plant science, leaf shapes, seeds, and pollination.  All this, and inspiring, fun illustrations to lead the way.

This is truly and interactive book, sure to keep curious children engaged in the natural world around them as they discover and learn about plants, flowers and themselves.  This one is a winner!
