ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING II

One of the most instructive “Final Project” presentations made by a Master Gardener class in years gone by, was a wonderful introduction into the “smaller-sized world” of gardening known as Square Foot Gardening.  I remember thinking at the time, hmm, this might be a bit complicated for a “remedial math student” such as myself, especially with all that measuring.  So, though I found it an interesting concept, I promptly filed it away under, “check this out at another time”!

Well, this is “that other time”.  I recently purchased the All New Square Foot Gardening II by Mel Bartholomew.  Holding it in my hot little hands and having the opportunity to read, re-read and reflect on key passages, I not only find the book utterly fascinating but the gardening method thoroughly practical and exciting.  And the idea of precise measurements which originally made my brain glaze over actually became understandable with Bartholomew's expert descriptions and directions.  In fact, the beauty of this book is that there are no complicated tools or ingredients.  You just need the basics—which makes it a perfect guide for all level of gardeners—especially beginners.

The premise of the book is, that while not everyone has a spacious yard in which to grow the ideal garden, you can still have the garden of your dreams.  This top-rated gardening guide teaches the reader how to create an amazing garden in just a few square feet.  It guides you through creating a small plot close to your home using vertical gardening techniques to grow beautiful, healthy plants.

The Square Foot Gardening II is chock full of easy to understand, useful information.  The one downside might be that the recommended soil mixture can be pretty expensive.  So, before you begin, do your homework and shop wisely for your soil.  And remember—you'll still be using far less good soil and amendments in your “square foot garden” than in your whole big yard!
